With elections to the state Assembly due to be announced any day now, the opposition National People’s Party received a boost in Kharkutta constituency of North Garo Hills with former legislator and Assembly Speaker Elstone D Marak and his supporters joining the Conrad Sangma-led party.
In a pre-election campaign at Adokgre village which was attended by around 2000 people, NPP chief Conrad Sangma welcomed the former speaker into the NPP fold.
Welcoming E D Marak and his supporters, Conrad Sangma said that winds of change are blowing in both the Khasi-Jaintia and Garo Hills as people were keen to oust the Congress and bring the NPP to power in the state.
Conrad told the gathering that the NPP would usher in all round development for the state and appealed to the people to vote overwhelmingly for his party.
Addressing the crowds, E D Marak said that only the NPP can stir the state in the direction of development and praised Conrad Sangma for his leadership and vision.
A host of senior NPP leaders also took part in the rally including Dadenggre legislator James K Sangma, Damas MDC Dolly K Sangma, former MLA Timothy D Shira and Khakutta NPP candidate Rupert Momin.
Kharkutta is currently held by Congress MLA Cherak W Momin.
